Polymers with Municipal Sludge
»There are three basics polymers.

»Emulsion Cationic polymers are generally used to de-water municipal sludge. These products are used with sludge that has an acidic pH, less than 7. The feed rate for these products varies based on the concentration of solids in the sludge to be dewatered. Typical feed rates are 50 ppm (1 % solids) to 200 ppm (5% solids).

»Water Based Cationic Polymers are generally used in the separation of solids in an industrial process. They are not generally used to de-water sludge because of cost considerations.

»Emulsion Anionic polymers are used both in a waste treatment process to separate solids and water and in a few processes for sludge de-watering. The sludge generally has an alkaline (above 7) pH.

»All three types of polymers come with different weights and charges.

»The emulsion polymers must be blended down prior to use. Typically the blending process is completed automatically with specifically designed equipment. The polymer is blended down to approximately 0.05% and then fed to the sludge. The sludge and polymer are then mixed and put onto a surface that allows the water to dissipate while capturing the solids.
